On Tuesday, October 20th, 2020 the Irondequoit Town Board unanimously passed a resolution establishing the Irondequoit Commission Advancing Racial Equity (ICARE COMMISSION). The Town Board has charged ICARE COMMISSION with the responsibility to review, identify, develop and make recommendations about town policies, procedures, practices and programs that seek to build and grow a more equitable community.

The Mission of ICARE COMMISSION is: To advise the Irondequoit Town Board on how it can work to make Irondequoit a community where each individual is respected, valued and cherished regardless of their race, ethnicity, religion or cultural identity.

APPLYING TO BE PART OF ICARE

The Irondequoit Commission Advancing Racial Equity (ICARE Commission) is an intentionally diverse group comprised of Irondequoit residents. The ICARE Commission is led by a Chairperson and two Vice-Chairs who, in consultation with the Town Board, have selected 12 members of the community to help lead ICARE as Commission Members. The Commission held an open application process for all Irondequoit residents who were interested in applying to serve as ICARE Commission Members in 2020. Applications were accepted from Monday, October 26, 2020 , through Friday, November 20, 2020 and the application window is currently closed.

In addition to Commission Members, the ICARE Commission is will, when necessary, seeking individuals who are interested in participating on its Working Groups Members. Patrina Freeman

is a dedicated resident of Irondequoit, is an Ordained Minister, loving wife and mother, and fearless advocate for the advancement of the common good. Born and raised here in Western New York, she earned a Master of Divinity in Theology from the historic Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School in 2004. While attending Colgate, Patrina began her local community service work, and has continued to do so for the past two decades.

With her passion for community engagement and justice for all, she has spent the last several years working on matters of diversity, equity, and inclusion with the Irondequoit Police Department’s Recruitment Advisory and Community Focus Committees; as well as the East Irondequoit Central School District’s Diversity and Equity Committee.

Elected to public office on November 5, 2019, Patrina Freeman began her first term as a member of the Irondequoit Town Board. In 2020, she was selected to participate on the Policing Work Group of the Monroe County Race and Structural Equity Commission (RASE) and continues her work with other local civic groups to make our community a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable place for all.

An avid “guardian of equity,” Patrina practices what she preaches by advocating that “there is enough room at the community table for everyone.”

Paul Stack

Not only has Paul grown up and raised his children in Irondequoit, he currently lives and works here teaching social studies at Eastridge High. Paul appreciates the opportunity to invest in the town’s work for racial justice.

Through dialogue, empathy and policy solutions, Paul expects that ICARE will help Irondequoit become a more inclusive and equitable community.

Leslie R. Harvey

is a longtime resident of Irondequoit, NY and currently serves as Housing Outreach Administrator for The Housing Council at PathStone. Leslie is a member of the Citizens Advisory Committee for the Irondequoit Police Dept. and will serve as Vice-Chair of ICARE COMMISSION (Irondequoit Commission Advancing Racial Equity). Leslie is a dedicated and strong advocate for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and after much travel and coursework through Neighbor Works America became a Facilitated Trainer in February of 2019. Leslie also serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Aenon Baptist Church, is a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Theta Upsilon Sigma Chapter, and was a Finalist for ‘Community Leader of the Year’ at the Black Men Achieve Awards Gala in 2018. Leslie is a graduate of Roberts Wesleyan College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Organizational Management.

Meet the ICARE COMMISSION Members

The Irondequoit Commission Advancing Racial Equity (ICARE) consists of a Chairperson, two Vice-Chairs, and 19 community shareholders, all appointed by the Town Board.  Among the membership of ICARE are one student representative from each of the three local high schools: Eastridge, Irondequoit, and Bishop Kearney. Mitchel Adams

has lived in Irondequoit for 46 years, with his wife and two children. He is veteran of the United States Air Force.

Mitch has worked in the human resources field for 29 years, including at Xerox and the Rochester City School District, and holds a Master’s Degree in Management/Human Resources from Indiana University.

Diane DeRuyter

The diversity, proximity to downtown, nature, and the amazing family-oriented community of Irondequoit is what attracted Diane and her family to the area a few years ago. In a town that she now considers home, Diane is honored to be part of ICARE; lending her voice to promote racial justice and equity.

Diane is a master's level mental health therapist working in a community mental health clinic in downtown Rochester. A lifelong advocate for social justice, she lives in Irondequoit with her husband and two children.

Evelyn Holmes

works for the Rochester Economic Development Corporation (REDCO). She comes with motivation and initiative to work within the Irondequoit community to help build policies, procedures, practices and programs which are equitable for all community residents.

Courtney Shouse

Courtney actively demonstrates her commitment to advancing racial equity by working on the ICARE Commission Member in ways that will lead to a more just, inclusive, and equitable community both now and in the future.

Chris Cardon

has lived in the Town of Irondequoit for over 30 years and taught in the West Irondequoit Central School District. Currently, he is retired from teaching and serves as the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Irondequoit High School. Chris and his wife Roxanna have been married for 39 years and have two children.

He is honored to be selected to serve on the ICARE Commission. It is Chris’s goal to increase the awareness and opportunities for people of different races and cultures in our town while embracing and enhancing the great diversity that Irondequoit has to offer.

Dr. Richard Clark Eckert

is an author, sculptor, sociologist, husband, and father who is committed to racial justice and is honored to serve on the Commission. He is excited about working with other members of the commission and the community in challenging racism.

Rosa Vargas-Cronin

Rosa Vargas-Cronin and her family have called Irondequoit home for 10 years. Her passion for
education and her community keeps her striving for improvement. She is proud to be involved with the
ICARE commission. Rosa is focused on the important work of fostering equity, inclusion and diversification of the systems that hold our community together.

Jae Min Yandow

is excited for this opportunity to serve Irondequoit. He graduated Eastridge HS in 2000 and now raises his family in the same Laurelton neighborhood he grew up in.

Tracey Williams

works for the Rochester Economic Development Corporation (REDCO), and looks forward to bringing an open and honest mindset to help ensure that the Town of Irondequoit is a great place to live and equitable for all residents.

Joy M. Claboine

has worked in the City of Rochester with youth and families for over 30 years. She is dedicated to making sure all people are treated equally and fairly no matter their race.

Chaplain Randy Henderson

a native of Richmond, Virginia, is President and CEO of Henderson Ford and Proprietor of Quick Lane Tire and Auto Service Center in Webster, NY and has over 25 years’ experience providing leadership, council and mentoring in the business and church environments. He and his wife, Marion have three children, 8 grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Chaplain Henderson attended Duke University studying Economics and Political Science and is an ordained minister through Church of Love Faith Center.

Randy is also the founder of a local not-for-profit organization, “Henderson Family Ford Foundation” that donates primarily to local youth groups, charities and faith-based youth programs. Currently, he sits on a number of non-profit boards, and counts serving ICARE as one of his great honors.

Annalisa Rogers

can describe her interest in ICARE in a word: Empower. As a community partner and life-long advocate her personal and professional goal has always been to ensure that the current social systems in place are fair, equitable and representative of the whole community.

Annalisa looks forward to aiding her community in its continued endeavor of economic and social advancement for a prosperous and safe Irondequoit for all.

Lisa R. Wall

is a mother of three, grandmother of three, and has lived in Irondequoit for over 20 years. She is a woman of faith who strives daily to love God and love His people.

Lisa firmly believes that as we pursue change, we must remember that real change begins in the heart and the mind of an individual. If we cannot change their mind, we cannot change their behavior.
